Hector Canonge lives and works in New York City where he studied Comparative Literature, Filmmaking and Integrated Media Arts. His work incorporates the use of various media, commercial technologies, physical environments, cinematic, and performative narratives. Canonge has been a resident artist in LMCC Swing Space Program 2011 at Governor’s Island, he is currently a resident artist for The Laundromat Project: Create Change Residency Program with his project The Inwood Laundromat Language Institute (TILLI), and will be launching in the Fall 2011 his three-month initiative, EVA -Escuela Videográfica Alternativa (Alternative School for Videomaking- in collaboration with Immigrant Movement International.

Canonge has been awarded scholarships by Harvestworks, fellowships by NJCU, and has participated in residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, AIM Program 27 at the Bronx Museum of Art, Newark New Media at City Without Walls, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University, and The Wassaic Project. Canonge’s work has been featured at the Queens Museum of Art, Jersey City Museum, Bronx Museum of Art, NY Studio Gallery, Exit Art, Flux Factory, Gallery Aferro, Topaz Arts, Y Gallery, and other art spaces in the city and abroad. He’s been commissioned by the NYC Department of Transportation, The Queens Council on the Arts, Queens Museum of Art, Artists Unite, Association of Hispanic Arts (AHA), and has received funding awards from NYSCA, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council -MCAF Program, and NoMAA Regrant Program through the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation.

Canonge's work has been reviewed by the The New York Times, ART FORUM, New York Daily News, Hispanic Magazine, Manhattan Times, Queens Chronicle, and by online publications such as NYRemezcla, Turbulence, and ART CARDS Review among others. His projects have been followed by NY1, NPR Radio, UNIVISION, CNN, NBC and ABC with programs such as Tiempo and CNN Español Encuentro. As part of his own initiatives, Canonge launched the film series, CINEMAROSA in 2004, and co-founded QMAD, Queens Media Arts Development, a non-profit arts organization in 2005.  He has curated the exhibitions FRAMING AIDS (2007, 2010) hosted at the Partnership Gallery of the Queens Museum of Art; BABEL (2010) at Space 37, a temporary storefront space in Jackson Heights; and he currently runs the monthly program A-Lab Forum at Crossing Art Gallery in Flushing, Queens.
